Vatican Museums, Rome – June 2011

Most people know the Vatican as the headquarters of the Catholic Church and the home of the Pope.  But the Vatican Museums are a surprising treasure trove of art and antiquities gathered by the church over the centuries.  And the collection is only part of the spectacle – the buildings and rooms themselves (culminating, of course, in the Sistine Chapel) are equally impressive.  This shot is looking up at one of the many beautiful domes within the museum complex and the central medallion is a beautiful example of chiaroscuro, a technique that makes drawings appear uncannily 3-dimensional.

This is part of a series of non-food photographs that will be published every Saturday on CookSister – previously featured photographs can be viewed on the Saturday Snapshots archive pages. Photos featured in Saturday Snapshots are available to buy as high-quality greeting cards or prints in my RedBubble store, or even as gorgeous A3-size2011 CookSister calendars for foodies, for London-lovers, Italophiles or beach lovers.

If you want a custom calendar with your own selection of photos, starting in a month other than January, please e-mail me and we can discuss your requirements. They make great gifts, for friends or for yourself.
