Facade – Greenwich Peninsula, August 2010
Last week we were in Maritime Greenwich, this week we are on the Greenwich Peninsula, a tongue of land to the south of the River Thames that extends north, just east of the Isle of Dogs. It was here the the Millennium Dome was opened on 1 January 2000 to house the Millennium Experience exhbition for one year. Opening on time but hilariously over budget, the exhibition could not attract enough paying visitors to recoup its losses (despite being the most-visited attraction in Britain in 2000) and closed amind controversy on 31 December 2000. After standing empty for a number of years, the venue has reopened in 2007 as the O2 and is now the most succesful concert venue in the world. Recently, other buildings have sprung up near the Dome, including these with their intriguing round windows and almost Moorish tiled facade. You can also see the yellow roof supports of the O2 dome reflected in some of the windows on the upper left.
