Rockefeller Plaza skater – New York City, 2006
Although I’m currently basking in the sun, I know that many of my northern hemisphere readers are in the depths of winter – and I’m keenly aware that I will be back with them in winter wonderland (or seasonal affective disorder!!) by Christmas. So today we are back to a chillier theme than last week.
I first saw pictures of the ice rink at the Rockefeller Plaza in New York City when I was about 15 years old, in the charming movie Splash. I thought it was the most enchanting and romantic place that I had ever seen and I yearned desperately to see it as it had been portrayed in the film. However, my first eagerly-anticipated visit to NYC was in August and there was no ice rink to be seen. But when I returned a few years ago, it was in October and the ice rink was exactly as I imagined it. Here, a lone skater is overlooked by the gilded statue of Prometheus.
