Play ball! – Oktoberfest rides, Munich 2004
When I first went to the Munich Oktoberfest, six years ago, I expected lots of beer, lots of drunk Australians and lots of lederhosen. I got all of this in spades. What I didn’t expect was how many of the Fest-goers were German locals, and that they would be wearing their dirndls and lederhosen with pride and not a trace of irony. I didn’t expect the tents to be as insanely large as they are, and so very unlike any temporary structures I had ever seen. And I didn’t expect the tents to be surrounded by the biggest fairgound I have ever seen, with everything from helter skelters to candy floss stands to ferris wheels to rollercoasters – in duplicate! I also didn’t expect to love the Oktoberfest as much as I did.
By the time you read this, I will be in a beer tent soaking up the atmosphere (and the beer!) at the Wies’n in Munich for the sixth time, and it won’t be the last. Prost!
