Glory be to God for dappled things – September 2008
Some leaves are green. Some are brown. Some are yellow. This little guy couldn’t make up his mind and decided to try all three colours at once. The title is a line from a lovely little Gerard Manley Hopkins poem, Pied Beauty, that my mother often used to quote. Hope it gives you as much pleasure as it has always given me.
Glory be to God for dappled things—
For skies of couple-colour as a brinded cow;
For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim;
Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls; finches’ wings;
Landscape plotted and pieced—fold, fallow, and plough;
And all trades, their gear and tackle and trim.
All things counter, original, spare, strange;
Whatever is fickle, freckled (who knows how?)
With swift, slow; sweet, sour; adazzle, dim;
He fathers-forth whose beauty is past change:
Praise Him.

It’s beautiful; gorgeous colours. Wonderful also because I have the same plant here…is it a coleus? I remember you quoting your Mom on Lewis Carol’s lines …’the time has come the walrus said’…on one of my posts. She must love poetry…& it’s fabulous that such connections can weave a web! Those lines are as beautiful as the leaf Jeanne!

What a beautiful leaf. Almost as beautiful as the poem.
